Thomas Fairfax: The Editions

There are currently four publications that provide access to Fairfax's poetry in print. In date order, they are: Clements Markham's Life of the Great Lord Fairfax (1870); Edward Bliss Reed's edition of The Poems of Thomas Fairfax (1909); M. A. Gibb's The Lord General a Life of Thomas Fairfax (1938); and Alastair Fowler's The Country House Poem: Cabinet of Seventeenth-century Estate Poems and Related Items.

  • Edward Bliss Reed (ed.), 'The Poems of Thomas Fairfax From MS. Fairfax 40 In the Bodleian Library, Oxford', Transactions of the Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences, Vol. 14 (1909), pp. 237–290.
    A larger collection of Fairfax's poems from MS Fairfax 40, but still a limited selection. It includes only four of Fairfax's 150 Psalms, which reflects the secondary status often assigned to such works.
